SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - Five wrestlers on the Dominican Republic's national team are believed to have deserted the squad in Spain, officials said Tuesday.
The athletes, aged 19 to 24, left a training camp on Sunday, telling teammates that they planned to desert, said Dominican wrestling federation president Antonio Acosta. He said there has been no word from the five men since.
The deserters - Richard Ramos, Aneudis Navarro, Edwin Tomas Abreu, Alfredo Docembil and Eddy Agramante - were among 12 wrestlers who qualified to represent the Caribbean nation in the upcoming Olympic-style Pan American Games in Brazil.
"These men did not realize how important they were to our country and that they had an opportunity to raise up high the name of the Dominican Republic," Acosta said, adding that trials will be held to replace the missing members.
The wrestling team is scheduled to return Thursday to the Dominican Republic.
Thousands of Dominicans try to reach countries like Spain and the United States each year seeking economic opportunity.
