ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (AP) - Grenada Prime Minister Keith Mitchell says West Indies A should not undertake a cricket tour of Zimbabwe next month for safety reasons.
Mitchell, also the chairman of the 15-nation Caribbean Community's subcommittee on cricket, said the situation in Zimbabwe was far too unstable.
"The West Indies A team has many very young players who need to be developed in a nurturing environment," Mitchell said. "I am not convinced that given the instability existing in Zimbabwe that this tour will provide this kind of environment."
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has been widely criticized for human rights abuses, and for leading the country into economic and political turmoil.
Bangladesh toured Zimbabwe in February, but last month Australia was prevented from touring in September for political reasons by its government.
The West Indies Players' Association asked its cricket board to reconsider the five-match A tour, but the team is expected to depart for Zimbabwe on Friday, even though the WICB has yet to name a squad.
