The ’Palance’ craze hit the semi-finals of the International Power and Groovy Soca Monarch competition on Sunday.
As soon as the duo of JW and Blaze ended their performance at 2.20 a.m the majority of the crowd began to filter out of the Arima Velodrome although there were still at least ten artistes remaining to perform.
The radio announcers sent everyone wild-from the patrons in the stand to those flocked at the foot of the stage-as they performed their widely popular song ’Palance,’ which was composed and produced for them by Kernel Roberts. The dust raised as big flags waved and people stomped, jumped, wined and ran from left to right as the two ’palanced’’ on stage.
The night proved a long one in which patrons remained standing still during the performances of several competitors, leaving many to wonder how they made it to the semis in the first place. Fifty artistes competed in the Groovy category, while more than 40 were registered to participate in the Power category, all of them accompanied by the band, Vincent and The Unit.
Among the artistes who delivered crowd pleasing performances was Olatunji Yearwood who sang ’Disorderly’. Leaving the stage, Yearwood climbed the fence between the stage and audience dancing on the scaffolding, amazing people with his dexterity. Patrons sang the chorus of Rikki Jai’s ’Barman’ when he performed in the Groovy category, while the duo of KMC and Ronnie MacIntosh got some to do their spin dance when they performed ’While You Can.’
Shyann Bailey kicked off the Power category with ’Drag It’ and managed to move the crowd that by then had witnessed at least 50 performances in the Groovy segment of the competition, most of which failed to impress them. Giving a good account of themselves on the night were Terry Seales, Tallpree, Denise Belfon and Ghetto Flex, Buffy, Umi Marcano and Patrice Roberts.
